Anyway here's my story,  I've owned a Spencer S# 21XXX for about 25 or so years ....

I converted it with a S&S Upper Breach Block, the bore is as nice as I've seen , However the exterior is gray with no org. finish
however the modeled caseharden breach still shows darks and light grays but no color. There is a 21 (rack # perhaps) early stamp on the side plate in front on the hammer. Spencer Line & Address is clear 22" barrel in 56-56
The wood shows wear and a crescent carbine sling snap hook wear marks. saddle ring and rear Sling loop are in place.

So today, 12/10/05 I go to my favorite toy store ( Gun Dealer ). Here they cater to BP Muzzle loaders and CAS shooters mostly , In fact you seldom find anything modern ( maybe a consignment or trade in ) . The Owner is a SASS member.
Anyway, I go to do some Horse trading. I'm retroing my shooting impression to * early Cartridge... So I'm thinkin I'll trade a Flintlock Smooth-bore fouler
( not an original and I don't shoot patch ball, In fact I traded for it ) for a 73 Uberti (  I'm thinkin I'll add the 73 as the main and my Henry will backup )
So the one he has is not my preferred caliber. Ahhhh ! but my eye catches a Spencer NIB and it is in 45 Sch. same as my opentops.
Hmmmm me thinks ... the Henry does me just fine and what the hey ....  the deal is struck.

So instead of the 73 , I came home with the Spencer .... 10 shots ...spenc-shots ....it's got style baby !

Hi Major,

Long ago (last year!), I decided to go after a Spencer in .45 Schofield just to simplify my shooting,  'cause I holster two S&W Performance Center (.45) Schofields.  Let us know how the .45 Schofield performs, as there were concerns posted on this forum about loading/unloading jamming problems with the Schofield round.  My 200 gr from Ten-X work just fine in my .45 Schofield Spencer.

I like shooting both percussion and early conversion pistols, for which the Spencer is perfect (speed is not an issue with me).

10 shots?  I thought the Schofield variant could only hold 8?

You can put 9 in the magazine and one in the chamber for a total of 10.  Same goes for the 44 Russian version.

Hadn't considered the one in the chamber since that isn't allowed around here.  I usually just load the nine and then load extra as needed, either in the chamber or via the magazine if more than two rounds are required.  Definitely wins style points!

I was referring to 99.9% of CAS stages require 10 rounds in the rifle.
My Original holds 7 so I  assume the New variants did as well , My bad and my delight to find out the they hold 10.

Speed is no longer a concern.... been there, done that , played out...

I had HAD slicked Rugers , and action worked Marlin and Stoeger it was JUST to much, ceased to be fun so I sold them to some fellows' who wantED to start out.
I played at the mounted game too.

But the most relaxing fun was some 28 years as a Mounted Cavalry reenactor ,
I decided to hang up the SASS Comp.  and about the same time I retired as a Cavalry Unit Commander...(I still have the Horses)

My Colts & I decided, we wanted to go back and play with style, I had the Henry (a gift from my wife) so I needed a SXS but I wanted a Hammered SXS , after some research I'm very happy with my 12 guage 78 Colt TTN.

I plan to play half- fast ( hmmmm maybe that should read HALF QUICK )

I hope I don't have not feeding issues ( If I do I'll holler for help )

There is a problem with loading 9 in the magazine.  It has been my experience that when I loaded 9 blanks in the magazine with my 44 Russian model, I would get a jam more often than if I only loaded 8.  I think that it is due to the tension put on the spring in the magazine when it is compressed that much.  The second cartridge pushes the first cartridge into the chamber with too much force and a jam occurs

Little misinformation here.

The .44 Russian model holds 9 in the mag.  The .45 S&W holds only 8.  Usualy for a 10 round stage I'll load 5 in the magazine, and 5 in the Blakeslee quick loader tube.  Great fun!

I have one of the .45 Spencers, and it has been omnivirous, feeding anything I've put in the magazine so far, 200s, 230s, handloads and factory rounds.

Thanks for the heads up Major and Sarge... I haven't had the opportunity to run it in so to speak , Just got it Sat. and had to work Sun.
The Gun Shop ( my Friend ) owner threw in a box of Black Hills 180 gr. ( my normal fodder for my open tops) I'll see how these do.

I might order some Ultra-max 180's from Cabala's unless there is a better source (or maybe a source for Ten-X)

Major,

My first .44 Spencer would only take Ten-X ammunition.  It absolutely refused to feed anything else.  It also jammed like a house a'fire.  Didn't make any difference if I loaded a full magazine or something less.  Usually jammed on the second round.  Tayors tried hard to fix it (several times) but in the end, they gave me a new one.

Second .44 Spencer will feed almost anything I give it - at least so far.  Ten-X, Black Hills, my own reloads.  And, it doesn't jam, whether starting from a full or reduced magazine load.  I like this little carbine. I had it malfunction at a match last year and Taylor identified a defective part, which they replaced.  Can't say enough for their customer service.

You're right - you won't win any speed contests, but it definitely earns style points.
