From what I've read,  the 2nd Gen saa's ceased in 74? I just won a 2nd Gen saa that according to the Colt serial number look up was made in 75. Possible?

Pictures? ? are you sure it?s not an early 3rd gen.

I don't have the gun in hand yet. According to a list on the Colt forum, it is a 74, which as I understand to be the last year of the 2nd generation.

I've seen articles that say 2nd gen ended in '74 and then 3rd started in '76, though I've also seen a list that shows s/n's for '75.   I'll bet it is a late 2nd.  Easy enough to tell once you get it!

I just returned home and now have access to my Kuhnhausen SAA Manual.  He states 2nd gen s/n in 1975 ran from 70,501SA to 73,319SA.  Then there is a note which says:

73,319 2nd generaton SAA's were produced.  Although Colt 2nd generation SAA frame serial numbers ran through 73,319SA, the last 200 to 300 2nd generation SAA revolvers were assembled after production ended in 1975.  Most of the revolvers in this last group were assembled with 3rd generation type SAA cylinders and hands.  For this reason, many collectors consider 2nd generation SAA production to have actually ended at s/n 73,000SA.

Hope that helps.

Not really. I've seen a couple list that tell me 74, and the Colt site lookup says 75. Several people have said its a 74, so I reckon that's good enough for me.

Shouldn't matter unless you ever decide to change caliber or replace some major parts.  2nd gen frame and barrel, 3rd gen cylinder and hand.

Nope, all I intend to change is from loaded brass to empty brass! ;D  Oh, and maybe put some stags on it. I like stag grips. All my other sixguns have stags.
