I'm thinking about ordering a Std. Mfg. SAA engraved model soon. I just wanted to get the general consensus on these guns. They appear to be pretty well done. Any opinions? Thanks, Sandlapper

I can't remember where I read it, perhaps on youtube, but the person evaluating the Standard SAA said the over all fit and finish of the gun was nice. But, when he disassembled it, the internals were very rough. Not what he would expect from a gun with a MSRP of $1800 plus.

I have two, 7 1/2 and 5 1/2.
I wanted them for their Turnbull-like case hardening.
They didn't disappoint in that regard, but in terms of overall quality and shootability my Ubertis are just as good.

Does the Standard SAA have a recoil shield inside the frame?

Huh??  What on earth are you talking about??

Crossdrawnj

The small circular plate trough which the firing pin protrudes in side the frame. All SA Colts have one as well as their double action revolvers.

According to a schematic I found on the peacemaker specialists site it is called a recoil plate.

:) Ah So Deska  ;)

(Atz Japanese for "No S^&% GI).  Now I understand.  Peacemaker Specialists are, um, not quite on top of that, I don't think.  The Recoil Shield is the entire frame surface that faces the back of the cylinder.  Everybody else on the planet calls that little hardened disc a "Firing Pin Bushing."  I could be wrong and Peacemaker Specialists just might be correct but the world at large call it the firing pin bushing and we, collectively, could be all wet.

And, now that I understand your question, I don't have a clue.  It's ben so long since I had one apart, I simply don't remember.  Memory of a Gnat.  A real small Gnat.  Pietta have them though, even though they don't list them as a separate "part."  Its primary purpose is to prevent cratering of the recoil face at the firing pin hole which allows the Primer to remain backed out of the cartridge and jamming the gun.  Calling it a "Recoil Plate" actually makes sense, I've just never heard it revered to as such.  Hummmmmmm.

So I emailed Standard and they do come with the recoil plate installed.

:)  Well there ya go.  Going to the Horse's mouth so to speak.

Did Standard happen to elucidate what they call that little thing-a-ma-Bob by chance

Colt parlance is "recoil plate".
The Kuhnhausen book also lists it as a "recoil plate".

:) Well OK.  Recoil Plate it is.  However, I'm still gonna call it a Firing Pin Bushing.  Nanny Nanny Poo Poo  ::)
