Proof marks can be fun to figure out. If you want to get a good book on the subject try to find this one. "The Standard Directory of Proof Marks" by Gerhard Wirnsberger, translated by R.A. Steindler. Distributed by Blacksmith Corp. Publishers. Chino Valley, AZ. 86323
ISBN: 0-89149-06-X

I use it whenever I come across a European SxS shotgun or a strange pistol

Just write down the pertinent poop and ask...

Hi Will

The "pertinent poop" is a go idea. If you can also take a sharp digital close up photo of the markings on the water table (area on receiver where barrels and receiver meet) and area under the barrels where they meet up with the water table, I can tell you what all the markings mean. There should be symbols and words. Proof marks, shell lengths, guild marks etc.

I like this stuff, its fun figuring the history of something. One of the main reasons I became an antique dealer.

Hey Will,

Lone Gunman used one of the Bulldogs at the FDMRs annual this year. I loaned him some BP 38S&W loads fer it and it was way cool to see that old gun being put back in action!!!!! 8) ;D 8)

I inherited an old Iver Johnson 38S&W double action. It seems to be tight but I've never shot it.  I guess I need to get some BP loads and try it out. :) ;D 8) ::)
