I should really pay more attention to the hivernaughts

in this thread alone the suggestion of
ballistol / ballistol+water / moosemilk

was made by
+ Navy Six
+ Bunk - twice!
+ Drydock

+ Dave T

and a forum search shows 23 pages of glowing endoursements by such notables as
Sir Charles
Coffinmaker
JohnBoy
Pettifogger
Driftwood
Dick Dastardly
Fingers

and the list goes on...

apparently adding water to make moose milk helps considerably, especially since the water does quite a bit...
I shall modify the cleaning info on the BP SUBS page accordingly....

See? The Professor can actually learn something eventually.....

Info:
---------------------------------------
Ballistol contains medicinal grade mineral oil, alkaline salts of oleic acid, several alcohols,
Benzyl Acetate and an oil from vegetable seeds.

The chemical is a yellowish clear liquid with a consistency expected of a light oil. However, when it comes in contact with water it emulsifies, becoming a thick creamy white substance.

Benzyl acetate is an organic compound with the molecular formula C9H10O2. It is the ester formed by condensation of benzyl alcohol and acetic acid.

Benzyl acetate is found naturally in many flowers. It is the primary constituent of the essential oils from the flowers jasmine, ylang-ylang and tobira. It has pleasant sweet aroma reminiscent of jasmine. Consequently, it is used widely in perfumery and cosmetics for its aroma and in flavorings to impart apple and pear flavors.[1]

Neat stuff, you can almost eat it ....

apparently after mixing with water it can emulsify and somewhat solidify. do not try to "melt it" in  a microwave,
use hot water or a double boiler.

The sales manager (?) for Ballistol, at trade shows like Shot Show, etc., would regularly spray a bit in his mouth to demo that it is harmless.

When moosemilk sits, the ballistol and water separate somewhat and the ballistol settles on the bottom.  All you have to do is shake it up before using.  Never had to heat it.

I do have one problem with Ballistol, and that is the smell (straight ballistol, not the moosemilk).  I describe it as sorta like licorice.  But the smell literally takes my breath away.  If I am using it indoors I must have a fan blowing the fumes away from me.

And to reiterate what was probably mentioned above, don't rely on the ballistol coating left on your guns after the moosemilk dries.  Some folks have still found rust later.  Always lube with straight Ballistol after cleaning.

Coffinmaker

Well ... OK.  Ballistol, Ballistol, Ballistol.  I'm not actually a member of the band.  I kinda march to different tune.  First a CAVEAT:  Ballistol works.  Does what it says it will.  There was a time I toted a small airasol can around to squirt the Carrier Block of my rifles to keep the fouling soft at the breach.  Aside > Uberti rifles in 45 = Blow-By < end aside.  It worked well.  I don't like the smell. Aside > Personal < end aside.

Prior to dabbling with Ballistol, I used PAM.  Hydrogen Peroxide, Alcohol, Murphy's Oil Soap in equal amounts.  Little squirt on the Breach Block did the trix.  Also, PAM works well as a cleaner for BP & Subs guns.  I have absolutely no faith in Ballistol as a long term or storage lubricant.  Sorry, for me, doesn't cut the cheese.  Oil, real oil, lubricates and prevents rust.  CAVEAT:  NOT petroleum based Oil.  Petroleum based lubricants DO NOT play well with BP and Subs.  Use "Synthetic" oil.  Read the label or just buy a quart of Mobil 1 motor oil (Grease too)

The additional problem.  I reside in a small College Town.  SMALL!!  If Wally World doesn't have it, Mail Order.  I get real tired of Mail Order although that is how I have to get most of my shooting supplies.  So we finally come to my bottom line.  Lowes.  Biggest, baddest, bestest hardware store on the block.  Well .... our only Hardware store.  They carry Denatured Alcohol.  Lots of it.  Cheap.  They also carry Hydrogen Peroxide.  Lots of that too.  Also Cheap.  They carry Murph's Oil Soap by the gallon.  Cheap.  My one stop shop for all the ingredients for .... wait for it ..... PAM.  Got my small squirt bottles from Amazon.  Put my squirt bottle in a drink Cozy to keep the sun off it.  Run low??  Make more.

For actual cleaning of my guns, whether shooting with BP or Subs.  There is NO SUBSTITUTE for .... wait for it again ..... WATER.  Plain old water.  No expensive badly perfumed gunk (Wait .... I have never tried "Gunk").  Just water.  No bad smell, no mixing and I have an unlimited supply.  Trix.  After cleaning and DRYING, Oily rag thru the chambers and bore, Oily rag wipe-down .... Done.  NO RUST.  No orange crud.

PS:  I forgot to mention.  About that fella putting a squirt of Ballistol in hims mouth.  OK.  So it's semi-safe to swallow.  Try water sometime.  Marvelous cleaning agent and you can consume all you want of it.  However, I do caution to remember what FISH do innit   :o

Cliff Fendley

I actually very seldom make moosemilk. I normally clean with straight water and give the bore a squirt of straight ballistol and run a clean patch or two and wipe the outside of the gun down with a rag with a little bit a straight ballistol. Of course when I squirt the Ballistol in the bore sometimes I get a bit of milk if there is any water left for it to mix with.
