I am having my Taylors Spencer reworked by Larry.

Does anyone know where I can come up with one of his molds?

Thanks

David

Hello:

Your request seems to indicate that Larry might be lining your Taylor.
His bullet is designed for 34" to 36" twist.

An alloy that is approximately 16Bhn works well in his Spencer barrels.
The bullet should be sized to GROOVE diameter PLUS .001" to .0015".
Some Starline brass has enough internal taper that a corresponding expander is needed to avoid over expanding further down the case neck.  Otherwise loose bullets can occur.

Finding a Romano marked mold for his nominally 315gr. bullet could be a long process.
Except for a handful, all are cut in Lyman blocks and stamped LRRCO and Spencer.

Accurate Bullet Molds 51-320S is a close copy. The molds are bored via CAD so diameter can be changed to what you need.  Accurate does first-class work.

I can send you a couple samples from his mold if you want something to send to Accurate.
Corrected a misspelling. R/JKT

Kevin-

Thanks for the reply and, yes, he is relining it.  I've had the gun for several years (a Christmas present from my wife) never could get it to feed, never has been fired.  I even bought a box of TenX loads.  Jammed as bad as everything else. Asked him to fix that issue too.

I've read of a few folks on this site that have had him redo their Taylor spencers with great results.  Looking forward to that.  With all the other work to be done figured might as well use his mold too.

So, I guess from your comments you have one of Larry's molds?  The samples would be from that mold? Then sending a couple to Accurate would allow them to make a duplicate mold? If that is what you are suggesting, then yes, I would appreciate the offer.

I've not ordered a mold before.  How close would it be to the original (the bullet)?

Thanks for you input.  Appreciate the time & help.

Hello:
Please PM me with a digital address for mold photo's and a mailing address for samples.

Larry test cycles his work using dummies with slightly varying overall cartridge lengths to ensure minor OAL variations feed easily.

Try the N-SSA Forum "Wanted/For Sale" for a mold.  I have only seen one in several years.

Kevin-

Sent the info requested.

Sent it out today with 10 dummy rounds.  I knew he was going to cycle them, but did not know he would fix it some minor changes in OAL would work too.

Enjoyed talking to him.  Very nice and informative.

Romano's work is amazing. I shot one of his Model 1 Maynard's in the NSSA and it was a thing of beauty. I drool over the rare Romano Spencer's that come up for sale.

Kevin-

Thanks for the N-SSA lead.  Did not find one, but man, what a list of molds!

Hello, David:

Just texted you photo's and info on a custom mold that is available.
Samples out on Monday with related info.

Be sure Larry cycle-tests the daylights out of the rifle.  Not a matter of his work so much as Taylor's having variation in HOW WELL they cycle.  Be sure the cycling is in normal horozontal as well as muzzle up/down at 45 degrees, FOR AN ENTIRE SEVEN ROUNDS.
Some seem prone to cycling issues with either/both first and last rounds.

Most Spencers, both original and repro's take a bit of USER fiddling to achieve the optimal cycling MOTION.  Will send notes on this with samples. The most helpful tip on cycling involved using relatively hard bullet alloy to reduce feeding friction. Made a big difference for mine and with Larry's bore, did not reduce accuracy.

Maybe your Taylor has a fly on the tumbler.  If so, ask about Larry tweaking the trigger pull a bit.  Some are very heavy and have relatively soft mating surfaces that may not remain consistent in use! Ask him about hardening critical bearing surfaces.  Some Italian repro arms, not sure about Taylor, are notorious for soft parts.
