Thanks, Buck. Your work is the best.
It just need latigo strings and maybe more of a suntan. Rubbish camera, I'm afraid.

I know this is two years old, but what did you use for the rings on the bottom, D-rings or just plain rings?

Black River Smith

Skeeter,

I guess I missed this as an original thread.  Sir, you did a very nice job on that scabbard.

I wanted to make a scabbord just like that after seeing the first one in Packing Iron on page 167.  It was not identified as a Meanea but I really liked the shape.  I intended to make a plain one with some general bordering for my original 1873 Win.  The closest I came was to aquire enough leather; create a photo copy enlargement of the pattern from the book; and paste the overall length together.  Basing sizing off the rifle wrist and stock measurements.  That is where I had to stop because of not knowing how much fold to add for thickness.  I think I have lost track of the photocopy enlargement after all this time also (darn).

Can I ask -- how or where you got your sized pattern for this old shape?

Nativeshooter Good question. I asked myself the same thing. I went with an O ring because of the difficulty of keeping a D ring in place.

BRS  I had access to an original Meanea pattern for the basic shape but I was asked not to hand it on to anyone else. Otherwise I'd have been glad to help. Good luck.

I figured the pattern from the one picture you have of it laying flat, modified my existing pattern

nativeshooteer,

You are better than me doing things like that then.  I need some reference measurement or some item in the photo to use for proportioning the final item I want to make.  If not then I could end up with a scabbard  that fits an 1876 rather than an 1873.  To me the barrel does not go all the way to the bottom of the outside edge so length does not work for me.

Glad it worked for you.

Like you, I just ended up getting the Old West pattern by Will Ghormley for scabbard pattern and will modify from there.

I used cardboard and my 66 and measured my first scabbard pattern, looking at the image of the meanea one I modified mine. I like nice leather and beaded things but i hate shelling out the money so i learn how  ;D.  Might have to use another box if it doesn't match up, I pretty good at crafting and stuff so somethings are easier than other like carpentry.

Bear in mind that the scabbard shown is for a rifle, not a carbine.

The image lying flat would measure all of 40 inches. Meanea cut his scabbards generously for length. For the carbine, trim it to 37 inches. You'd need to adapt the design accordingly.

Kinda figured that i had to adapt it to my rifle, working on it atm

Black River Smith

Skeeter,

Thanks for that useful measurement.
