I just bought a 1st. gen bolt for my 76,,it doesn't have the screw in plug for the firing pin,,,but I was told that a plug from a 1st gen. 1873 would fit ( screw in )  any one know for sure,,,,. I also need to know the thread size of the plug,,,all help appricated.

You might want to post a photo.  I have never heard of this part.  Maybe some know it by a differnent name.

Slamfire , i have two of the early bolts with the bushed firing pin. One is like yours missing the bushing , and the other is in perfect condition. When i can , i will remove the bolt from the circa 1878 45/60  for some pics. Would like to remove the threaded plug so we could measure it and make a drawing of it . I also would like a drawing of this part in order to fabricate one or two. One thing to remember the early bolt with the threaded bushing uses a different firing pin than the  later bolt without  the bushing  . I do have a spare of this early type  firing pin along with the one in the old rifle .  ,,,DT

Thanks for the description.  I understand what the OP is looking for, but have no idea where he can find one.

You Bet! Pettifogger. Here is a pic. of the Winchester 1876 bolt one on the left is the later version without the threaded plug . The one on the right is the early model with the threaded plug / bushing for firing pin. Note the firing pin difference . Glad Slamfire brought this up , when i disassembled these two they both needed cleaning.,,,DT
