Brand spanking new Longhunter tuned Taylors 1866 carbine in 44 Special... runs fine as is. I bought the stronger loading gate from VTI and installed it and now I have problems. Apparently a loading gate needs to be fitted? Somewhat?

With the new loading gate in place there is something prohibiting the carrier from rising all the way delivering around parallel to the chamber. It is almost as if the loading gate is a fraction of an inch too long or perhaps it's not bent correctly from VTI? The carrier is getting hung up on the loading gate. I can reinstall the factory Uberti loading gate and everything works fine again. I don't mind attempting to modify the aftermarket loading gate but if you all think it's perhaps cut too long from the manufacturer I just rather not modify it and ruin a chance of return.

As always, helpful comments very appreciated.

Just compare the original to the replacement using your calipers and remove the extra material a little at a time until it works. Before you go whittling though you could get some measurements of the replacement you call vti to see if that's the issue. I would also get a good light and with the gate removed look through the opening to try and see what's going on.  Hate it when I have to replace a part that I probably shouldn't have to and then the 'improved' part doesn't fit. Just my thoughts. Good luck.

PLUS ONE to Baltimore Ed.

You can't do anything until you know where the problem is.  I've found the new small flashlights with LEDs to be marvelous.  Install the after-market ladle and with the good light, peek inside as you cycle the action.  You should be able to look down thru the Carrier Block Mortice and see what is hanging up on the carrier.
