From the pictures I've seen, it seems like mother of pearl grips were more common on the nickel revolvers as opposed to wood. Is this true? Obviously there was some variation, but I don't see many mother of pearl grips on blued revolvers on the originals SAAs.

In my studies of No. 2 sized Smith & Wessons (.38 S&W), I have found that about 75% left the factory with black hard rubber grips.  Pearls were the next most common; about 15%.

Books, that's some esoteric knowledge right there! I assume that includes blued as well as nickel finishes. I was mostly curious about whether the nickel finishes were more likely to have the MoP grips.

Nothing scientific or statistical here, but now that you mention it the antique guns I've seen over the years that have pearl grips or handles do seem to be nickle plated more often than not.  I could theorize a few reasons.

In my small Smith & Wesson collection I have 4* with pearl grips all are nickeled.  I have 3 with the red mottled grips; 1 blue and 2 nickel.  All of the rest both nickel and blue have standard black hard rubber grips, with the exception of the blued 1st model Single action which has wooden grips.

Seventy-five percent of the collection is nickeled.

I second the good General. And I didn't even google it.
