I started shooting cap & ball in the early 70's and now I've taken it up again. I have a question about the old tins of Dynamic Nobel (I see everyone referring to them as RWS now) caps I have. They are numbered as size 55. I don't find reference on dealers sites listing any such size. Can someone address this for me?

The size #55 fit well on the 3rd Dragoon I just bought. The No. 11 Remington caps I got at Cabelas are not a proper fit on the 3rd mod.

Also I'm having a hard time finding suppliers of black powder items in the Okla. area. Things have changed a lot and I could use some help getting back into BP revolver shooting.
Thank you

Who is the manufacturer of the Dragoon? Colt, ASM or Uberti? I had a 2nd gen Colt Walker and 2nd Model Dragoon years ago and the cones were so large I couldn't find caps to fit them. My current pair of recent Uberti 2nd Model Dragoons took Remington #10s fine with the original cones. However, a couple of them were short enough(common with Uberti) that they wouldn't set off caps without backing them out slightly. I finally ordered Tresso cones from The Possible Shop. They fit the Remington #10s fine although I've heard people report they liked Remington #11s better for the same combination. As far as finding supplies, better get acquainted with mail order places such as The Possible Shop, Dixie Gun Works, Track Of The Wolf, Taylors Firearms, VTI Gun Parts, etc. I could list others and don't want to leave anyone out but that will get you going for traditional muzzleloading stuff.
Your story sounds similar to mine. I also started C&B guns in the early Seventies and had to stop when a bunch of life got in the way. Never stopped shooting but returned to the C&B fun about 10 years ago. Takes a little more attention to detail but worth it. Good Luck!! :)

echoe...I feel your pain.  I'm also in the Indian Territory and sometimes have a hard time finding black powder and any other things associated with BP.  I've found Goex red can at Bass Pro, H&H Shooting Sports (they're in OKC and also carry Graf) and for the rest I have to include Cabela's for such things as some leather goods (I usually make my own), caps and those felt wads.  Anything else I have to order.  Seems everything around here is geared to the 'tactical' and plastic guns.  Just finding the .321 bullets for my old 1894 .32 Winchester requires a day trip and/or ordering it and then waiting for the Pony Express, and their three-legged mule, to show up.  What perturbs me is when I ask for black powder (the REAL gun powder) I am always pointed toward the substitutes, pellets and more plastic do-hickey's.  'Y'all have Ted Cash cappers?"  "What is that?"  "Y'all got anything besides in-line rifles?"  "What else is there?"

Yep. I asked for a gun screwdriver kit and a bore light at H and H. The guy looked at me like I was the village idiot and just said they didn't have any and I ordered from Amazon. And yep, lots of plastic guns here in rainbow colors.

This should probably be in another thread but I keep reading the word "cones". Is this what everyone is calling nipples these days?

These are all good places to order from.  Cowboy Shooter's supply is still the place to go.  Small business run by someone the actually shoots BP & is a national champion at it.

The RWS #55s are the smallest caps out there. It may be that that big ol' hammer smack of the dragoon is enough to fully seat and fire them. The CCI #10s are the next smallest cap that might fit your cones. The RWS/Dynamit Nobel #55 & CCI #10 won't fit any of my pistols and would take 2-4 hits to set them off.

Is there variation in the measurement of the cones on Uberti-manufactured pistols? I thought they would all be the same dimensions. The Remington caps I bought are size 11 but don't seem to seat well at all and my tubular capper won't dispense them without a lot more pressure than I'm willing to put on it. I thought I read that the Remington-branded caps are manufactured by CCI under the Remington brand.
I obviously still have some homework to do.
thx to all for help.

CCI manufactures the Winchester caps under the Winchester brand. Remingtons only make Remington brands. Uberti cones probably have changed over the years but the recently made ones sure work well with Remington #10 caps. The Rem #10s are the same diameter as the #11s but are a little longer in order to grab a smaller cone farther down the shank. Remington #10s are more forgiving of nipple sizes since they are pre split and flare more easily when seated. The CCI #11s and RWS 1075s are close in size to the Rem#10s but are harder and don't flare as easily when seated. Half my guns take the RWS 1075s & the other half will take the CCI#11s but ALL will accept the Rem#10 caps (or I will replace the nipples with ones that will). I have Euroarms & Uberti Remingtons and ASM & Pietta Colt style revolvers.

Hellgate, your post is right on. I checked all my nipples on all of my Uberti/Pietta Colts and Remingtons several years ago with stock nipples and various sizes and brands of caps. Recently with some of the cylinders with recently installed Tresso's, Slix, and Track of the Wolf nipples to see what like's what as far as just capping for size and fit (no shooting). Plan on reporting soon after I have a monster shooting session with them when this North Iowa weather finally decides to be nice as to what guns like certain nipples and various sizes/brands of caps. I installed two nipples of each brand on each cylinder to see what gun likes what and then will fire 3-4 rounds with each gun to see what works best and/or functions best. Will eventually install one brand on single cylinders respectively, but interested to see what like's what. Believe I did this with six sets of nipples on a Walker, Transition Dragoon, 2nd Model Dragoon, 1860 Army and 1851 Navy 44. May eventually do Remington's and .36 cal 51 and 61 Navy's

Not everyone ;)  It is a resurection of the period term. (For those wishing to be considered wise.)

Old Remington #11 caps are the right size for your dragoon. Problem is Remington changed their #11 cap size to be essentially a different length version of the #10 (1970's). If you find some caps dating back to the very early 1970's they'd fit your biscuit.

I used my ONE tin of these I'd had for around 40 years after I got a Colt 2nd gen Dragoon. One instance in my life where that thing too good to throw away & too lazy to return was put to good use.

BTW, back in the day your Remington caps came with waterproofing, foil lining & a green tape seal on each tin.... and this one still had the $1.99 store sticker.

The use of "cones" was initiated by those that blush at the word "nipples"

Both words are interchangeable and have been so for over 100 years.
