I used to load that bullet in 45/70 cases to make an "Express" cartridge in that caliber. I don't have the books available right now but if you do a little research you'll find the ammo makers offered a 350g Express load in the 45/70 case back in the latter part of the 19th Century. I was surprised at the velocity I got from an original 1886 Winchester. Around 1500 fps with black powder if memory serves.

Hey Dave t,,thank's,,a friend has an original 1884 loooong rifle,,very nice cond., I load and shoot ,lever's ,,don't know enough about trap door's,,so you think this ( 457483) cast bullet would be a good lite load for his rifle??? I don't shoot BP,,just smokless.,,I do have some starline brass I cut down for my 40/60 win. Will look up load data.

I had good luck with that bullet in one of the trapdoors I used to have.  Notes say I cast it from straight wheel weights, no heat treatment, and sized to .459" (which matched the bore of my rifle).  Load was 55 grains FFg, no wads.  Lube was one of my home-brews, a saponified blend of neatsfoot oil and beeswax.  That load was one I loaded to let a friend's sons shoot the rifle, recoil was a bit less than carbine loads.
In my book a pioneer is a man who turned all the grass upside down, strung bob-wire over the dust that was left, poisoned the water, cut down the trees, killed the Indian who owned the land and called it progress.  Charles M. Russell

Thank you Longwalker,,sort of the load i'm looking for. This bullet number is not in Lyman's 49th. edition.
