44 Russian - 200 or a 205 grainer above 1.0cc -1.3cc of 2f Black Powder is a very awesome load.

It sounds like a warthog load but is very pleasant!

PJ Hardtack,

I use 4.5 grains behind a 240 grain SWC in 44 magnum all the time.

With standard primers the ignition will be a little erratic.

With magnum primers it works extremely well.

I don't know what the effect of your lighter bullet would be on the equation, but I do know that the change to the magnum primer made a big difference for me when I dropped below 5.0 grains.

For what it's worth, I seat the bullet so that I can crimp over the WC edge.

My .44 Russian loads were wit a RNFP 200 gr Lyman 427666, the cases crimped into the crimping groove.

4.5 grs Unique in a .44 mag case? I think the only reason you're getting away with it is the heavy bullet. Venturino wrote an article on 'detonations' occurring with small charges in large volume cases using light bullets.

I have shot the 44 Russian along with the 44 Colt for many years with a 200/205 gr. bullet and always used 4.7 to 5.0gr. of Unique with good results. Lately I have switched over to 3.0 to 3.9 gr. of Trail Boss. Also use a 246gr.RN with 3.0 to 3.5gr. Trail Boss. All loads give a good report and are accurate enough for me. Just check out the charts from the different powder companies.

The .45 Colt is below for comparison.

Mehavey - Good shooting!

That's exactly the load I have settled on for my wife's .44 Russians, NM Blackhawk Flat Tops. Knocks over steel very well.
