Could you please look up Spencer carbine serial number 12,839.  Thanks

The closest no. to your 12839 in the Springfield Research numbers is 12837 followed by 12843 both of which were issued to Co. I, 3rd Michigan cavalry in May of 1864. So it very probable that your carbine was issued to another company in the same regiment.

LOL. Well 2 Flints like you say the info on the numbers are not complete so it could very well have gone to Co. I but it could have gone to one of the other companies as well being as there were more than one or 2 companies in the same regiment that also had Spencers I`m sure. They just aren't listed in the records. But I feel 99%confident that it went to SOMEONE in that regiment wouldn't you agree? :)

Then again - it may've gone somewhere else, since these weren't shipped in serial number sequence.

Neither were Colts, Sharps, Burnsides or any other military small arm.

Whatever got into the crate was shipped and whatever got unboxed and signed for at the destination stenciled on the crate was dispersed to the gaining unit without regard to sequencing of bloc numbers.

Most of the soldier's Records indicate issuance of a 'Carbine', 'Rifle' or 'Revolver', and sometimes 'Saber' or 'Sword', because that was how they were viewed, and unless the individual's Muster Roll and Supply Record specifies a serial number, by war's end - it was a complete crap shoot as to whether what was initially issued was what was turned in.

Food for thought...

Hello SSS,

I have a Spencer Serial # Disclaimer that has been locked on the home page of SSS for many years . . . it is very detailed and tries to cover all objections, concerns, misgivings, and questions on how I arrive at my "issued to whom" conclusions.

Just this evening I received an Email from a lady unknown to me who requested serial # information . . . that serial # turned out to be an exact match for a Spencer Carbine as listed in my SRS books.

So unless I get an exact Spencer serial # match . . . I will continue to offer my "Two Flints guesstimation".  For whatever it's worth ::) Geeeeeezzz!
