I wonder if ALOX would be sufficient bullet lube to shoot smokeless rounds in a 20" 44-40 Barrel rifle ?

Thank you

I use 45/45/1o with my .45 Colt.  45% Lee Alox, 45% Johnsons Paste Wax, 10% Mineral spirits.  Use it like straight Lee Alox.  0 problems with leading.

I never had as problem using liquid alox. I do it the slow and messy way; Rub it on with my fingers and set the bullets on plastic to dry.

P.S; I don't see why 45/45/10 wouldn't work either.

I use it for lead bullets in military calibers with 12 gr Trailboss, that's similar velocity to your 44-40. No leading problems in up to 31" barrels.

I've used liquid alox on everything from .380 to .308 to .50-70 (smokeless) for thirty years.  I've never had a leading problem.  Great stuff!

I've used Lee Liquid Alox on Krag bullets out of 30" infantry barrels no problem.  Wonderful stuff.
Civilize them with a Krag . . .

Ahem!!  I don't use Lee Liquid Alox on anything.  Nothing.  Nada.  Nix.  None.  No where.  Zip.

However, there's 4 inches of snow all over everything.  I admit to being bored.  I'm going to be a nuisance on a regular basis.

OK guys, I'll try it in my 44-40 short rifle. I love the stuff in my handguns. Thank you for your input.

I have used Alox on lead bullets in .44mag.  I shot them as cast, applied the Alox using the empty butter tub method.  I set them on wax paper (base down) to dry.  Never any problems.

I put the bullets in a plastic container, add Lee Alox and roll them around a bit. Then I dump them onto waxed paper to let dry. I run the lubed bullets thru a Lee sizing die after that.

A friend of mine who reloads cast bullets a real lot has recently been diagnosed with elevated levels of lead in his body. One of the possible sources is handling of lead bullets while reloading. The way I look at it, the LEE Alox covers the whole bullet. There is probably even a thin coating on the driving bands after sizing. When they are handled, you are touching the lube and not the lead... that might be a good thing.
