Recently here there was a discussion on this picture of Gallatin chaps. The question was, is it a rivet or a leather roll button at the top of the line of stitching?
Originally there was a leather button at the top that went through the chaps and appeared on the front. But maybe the button has got lost and that's a rivet.
Surely a leather button alone wouldn't be enough to keep the chap leg closed. Wouldn't it pull out pretty fast? These are work clothes after all.
I'm making a pair of these so I want to get it right. With any luck, Buck Stinson will have some thoughts...

Here they are from the front.

I guess this is better late than never.  The Gallatin chaps I had are now in the Gene Autry collection.  I tried to find a photo that might show the side seam, but do not have one.  As I remember, the wide lace used at each side seam was set with a copper saddlers rivet on top without the Turks Head knot.  Knot and rivet on the cuff end.
