Hi all I finished up a cartridge cam at an event.  This is for my Chiappia 56-50.

First pic is the blank I cut along with the original.  FYI - its easier to drill the holes for the pins first on the blank, and then outline the form.  In this case after I drilled one hole and partially drilled the other, then I used two pins to mount the original on to the blank & I traced the basic shape.  Note the false start.

Next one is the finished cam, not fitted or blued.

The last one is the mounted cam - I had to file it in place for the final fit.

This new cam is a lot more forgiving than the original.  Its a really big improvement to feeding live and blank rounds both.

Had a couple of helpers, but I don't have their pics yet.  When I do I'll post them.

Two Flints

Pvt Greg,

Will you please show the original cam and your custom cam side by side? What is the function of the cam in a Spencer?

Two Flints,

Good request and question!

The cam helps lift up the rim of the Cartridge casing so that it feeds better into the chamber.
Easiest way I can offer an explanation.
Hope this helps.

As requested:

I understand it as the piece that along with the cartridge guides the round into the chamber.  If the cam is too low a profile the nose will hit below the chamber.  If too high it will hit above the chamber.  My old cam was too low.

Nachtor Man had a great vid about issues chambering blanks that explains it well.

That's a classic.  Very funny.

By the way, a late Phd chemical engineer, and forty-year dear friend once asked me:

"Do you know what becomes chemical engineering majors that cannot graduate?  ......
They become doctors".  Sorry.

This fellow was beyond brilliant.  Had Fed guards living in his large home in VA and they chauffered him in an armored Lincoln Town Car because of what he developed.  He came off of a tobacco farm in KY and went to a one room school until enrolling in the U of PA pre WWII.  After his Phd, the dept head and head of The Chemical Engineering Society of the U. S. wrote a one-line recommendation:  "This man can do anything you want."

There are people out there.....thank God.

Love.
