act of desperation

Before any one starts yelling "GAMER" let me say desperate men make despite moves and I was desperate.

I was loading for this weekend DRR match with my regular rifle/revolver load of 1.3 c/c FFFg gun powder, and a 200 grain BL boolet in the .45 short case. A plenty strong load about the same as the original .44 Henry when I ran out of boolets about 15 rounds short of my second box full.

Here comes the desperation move when I loaded 1.0 c/c FFFg under a wonder wad, and a .452 round ball that just does stick out of the case mouth. It is seated on the powder with slight compression and crimped so it won't (I hope) pop out under recoil. I guess it that makes it sort of SASS legal and most likely compared to some of the nitro shooters will approach Wart Hog proportions.

It will be a 5 stage match and 2 boxes will be enough until the end of the month match.

It is way too hot (5:23 PM and 95°) to cast more from now until November so I ordered some bullets from Whyte.

Well Bunk,
The only maybe "bad" thing about it, without a crimp groove, your Round Ball may well go "Turtle" in a Rifle.

Its gonna take a heck of a strong spring in the mag tube for any "turtle" action if he's got compression. wM1

I suspect this is a revolver only load!  Should be a good one.  Many's the .454 RB I've loaded over a Schofield case full of 3f and a Wonder/wax wad, crimped over the curve of the ball.  Shoots low, be warned.  Bet you like it.

I was going to  suggest using the proper bullet in the rifle to ensure feeding, and the RB in the revolver.

Mind you the RB load will probably strike lower on the target than the bullet. At SASS ranges, and using a center hold, you should be OK.

yes this is revolver load and I only have about 15 of them. The rifle has a Smith Shop lifter for shooting .45 Short  and a Coffinmaker positive slam down lifter arm. After 50 rounds it closes like the door on a bank vault tight and solid.
Thanks

I've shot 45 S&W (Schofield) rounds with 25 gr 3f, a wonder wad and a round ball, seated on the equator.  It is a pleasant load to shoot in my SAA copies!  I didn't persue using these in a lever action as I've been schooled to use only flat points in a tube feed gun to avoid primer detonation.

The rifle loads are 1.3 c/c FFFg and a J/P 210 Big Lube bullet in a .45 Cowboy Special (.45 short) case.
It makes a load that commands respect in rifle or revolver.

I tried a few C45S loaded with .452 round ball loads in my Cattleman.  I got a pattern about a foot in diameter at 10 steps.  Bigger ball may have helped but .452 is what I have.
