I've admired the 1876 for decades before buying one.  Found this Cimarron, 45/75, short rifle in the Anchorage Cabellas and had it shipped back.  Been happy with it but always wanted to make it a really special gun.

Finally got up the nerve to send it of to Macon Gunstocks for some nice wood, hand rubbed finish and checkering in an old Winchester pattern.  Sent them a checkered steel, pointed toe, butt plate along and had them add a couple of inches to the length of pull as well.

Got the gun back last week after many months....I'd stopped counting.  Sent them a set of Uberti wood first as a pattern just to get them to do it.  Action followed months later.  Delivery even longer.  Have yet to get my Uberti wood back.

Finish turned out so, so.   They sanded and checkered the wood prior to adding the lack luster oil finish.  But the majority of the inletting and wood are nice.   Nice enough that the forearm cap and steel butt plate really needed to be color cased before the gun was really "finished".  So gun came apart a few days ago and the butt plate and forearm cap went to Turnbull's for the color case.

I'm excited about getting the project finished and back to shooting the rifle.  And looking forward to posting an "after" picture to go with the "before".

Beautiful! Now to get her out hunting for some honest dings and dents! How do you like the shorter barrel? I'm assuming it makes for easier handling in the field?

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

Thank you Gentlemen.   Pretty much like my '86 carbine.  Easy to carry for weight ('76 were never light weights :), reasonable in an saddle boot and easy enough to shoot any distance I would use iron sights.

Life is too short to hunt with an ugly gun :)
