Holy Crisco!

Just cooked up a few batches of lube made from a 50/50 mix of beeswax and Crisco, and geez........it's a bear cleaning Crisco off of everything it came in contact with! The results are worth it though. I use it for bullet lube, and for saturating felt wads I punch for a couple different guns.

To make the lube I microwave the mixture in a glass container (it's a little larger than a mason jar, but I reckon using a mason jar would be just fine) and then pour it into a 24-space muffin pan that makes the smaller style muffins. When the "muffins" are cool I put them in zip-lock bags for future use.

do you nuke the beeswax separately to get the same volume as Crisco and THEN mix them or what? I've used BW and lard 50/50 but lately 50/50 BW & deer tallow (shot a fat buck) which makes a slightly harder lube.

I weigh each ingredient on a cheap kitchen scale from the grocery store. The last batch was 8 oz. of Crisco, and 8 oz. of beeswax to make all 24 muffins in the tin. It's a tight fit in my glass jar, so the Crisco goes in first, then the beeswax gets mashed in on top of it to fill the jar to the brim. I nuke it on half power for 3 minutes to melt a little bit of it, then take it out to stir it a little. It took about 4 rounds of heating and stirring to get it liquefied and mixed good.

I've been trying to get ahead on my casting for the spring.  I was pouring a 6 hole mold for 38 Slims, a 115 gr .357 Big Lube bullet for CAS.  I'd worked for a couple of hours when the mold handles got sticky so I touched the pivot with a bit of bee's wax I use for flux. A drop of the molten wax ran down the handle into the mold.
In disgust because I knew I was looking at a long cleaning project, I shut down for the day.
I keep my pot, lead and current use molds in an old barbecue grill that has a hinged top. I put everything away in the grill and went in to find some Jamesson's to help the nerves.
Today I go out to clean the mold only to find that when I put everything away I put the 1 lb block of bee's wax on top of the warm mold.
I had six of the prettiest 357 wax bullets you've ever seen. Somewhere around an hour and a half later, after a lot of scrubbing with soap and water then lacquer thinner, I got my first fully filled out bullets from the mold.

For mixing Crisco (or lard/ tallow, etc) with beeswax, I melt the lower temp
Crisco first in a whatever-fits-together/two-pot double boiler and mark the
surface height- and another mark half-again higher --  on the pot side. 

Then I add chunks of hard beeswax until the surface height rises to that
second mark (a 2:1 mix) and walk away to let things melt together.

Don't get any DD Mold Slick in the cavities.  To apply, heat the mold, cast some boolits and then cut the sprues on the last batch.  Lightly wipe the mold surface and the underside of the sprue plate and wipt them back.  Leave the cast boolits in the mold and apply mold slick sparingly.  Touch the sprue pivot and the hold down collar.  Then, open the mold and touch the alignment cavity.  Touch the main handle bolt and put your mold slick away.  Mold lube is your friend, but use it sparingly.  I love to sell it, but a 2oz bottle will last you a VERY long time. .
