Krag Carbine

At a gun show in Knoxville.  Krag carbine, ser. no. unknown (didn't look that close), good condition, mfg, 1899.  Asking $2400.  Opinions?

While I had nothing to do for a while I did some checking of prices on different services.  I found six genuine carbines (not cut down rifles or what one person referred to as a "Bannerman Special").  All but one ran $1100-$1400.  That "outlyer" was $2600.  I didn't buy anything.

I find myself wanting a Krag rifle or carbine now.  Which would be correct for an enlisted man in the SpanAm "war"?

Depends if you were CAV or INF.  CAV the carbine and a revolver of some sort, INF would be the rifle and no pistol.  Revolvers varied from the issue 38 Colt double action to reissued Artillery model SA Colt.

Thanks. Found an affordable carbine with all the wood still intact. Comes with ammo, brass, and dies. We are negotiating.

You reckon $450 is fair for the carbine (bore is supposed to be dark, but still good rifling) and brass and reloading dies?

The bore can be dark - you can fix that - but it shouldn't be pitted, or you'll be using jacketed rounds.

It might have a barrel from an '03, though - making it something far less than an original Krag Carbine, which have their own serial numbers and idiocyncracies.

This 1899 is available at Cabelas in LaVista, NE.    

If you have a local Cabelas store they will have any gun from any one of their stores shipped to the local store for you.  My understanding is that you can still refuse it if you don't like it.  I've never done this personally, just passing on something the gun library guy at my local store told me.

Unfortunately,  while it is an 1899 receiver, someone has installed a cut down rifle barrel, a 1903 front sight, and a well sanded (Possibly aftermarket) 1899 stock.  A nice looking shooter/parts gun, but nowhere near $1200.

Sorry, grabbed the wrong 1899.  Here's the one I had wanted to post.  It's in WA state.  It's also a little more money but it looks more or less original with a properly attached front sight and a "C" marked rear sight.  It is more money than I paid for mine, I guess it all comes down to how much you want one.
