My Sharps

I thought the same thing when I got my Pedersoli replica of the Confederate Sharps which did not have the sliding sleeve. I have an unfired Sharps made from original parts that have the sleeve which is part of the breech sealing system, but never shot it because the sleeve cannot be removed completely to clean it. Most original Sharps have the sleeve rusted in place and do leak gas.

The Hahn Machine Works conversion makes this a non-problem. When I first got the gun there seemed to be a better way to shoot it than paper cartridges. Three or four shots and the breech was frozen I place. The brass cases Pedersoli makes help for about 8 or 9 shots that was still not satisfactory.

Also those cases cost almost $5.00 each and while easily reloadable still $5.00 is a bit pricy for this old retired cowboy.

With the conversion I am not sure how many shots are possible because when testing and shooting for zero using paper cartridges I shot about 45 rounds and when I cleaned the gun the breech block face had just the smallest bit of fouling.

It still opened easily, closed easily, and cleaned easily. Drop the block, remove the ring and "O" ring which presses the ring against the breech face, and swab away.

Using the readymade paper tubes loaded with 45 or so grains of  FFg powder and  a 340 grain bullet it is a pleasure to shoot and very accurate.

That is my experience but your mileage may vary.
