Thanks, Herbert for info. If I want to load bullets by using the mag tube, does the extractor slide into it's groove automatically before the next bullet is fed? Thanks, John

Herbert

Yes the extractor will move forward automatically when the action is closed.the extractor should be under forward spring pressure on your carbine,if this spring is missing or broken the extractor will sometimes stick in the back position, not a problem if feeding from the magazine but can cause problems when single loading if you are not carful and load the cartridge ahead of the extractor

Thanks Herbert! I am learning! Is Starline the best cases?

My experience with Starline cases has been that they did not extract reliably from a Model 1860 Spencer rifle or a Model 1865 Spencer Burnside carbine (both with the long, thin, non-springloaded extractors) because the rim was a tad too small.  I have heard of people using them successfully in their Model 1860's, but that was not my experience.

They worked well when I tried them in a Model 1867 and a New Model that used the Lane extractor.

I have not tried them with a Spencer having a springloaded blade extractor.

The 56-56 and 56-50 cases I have used that were made from .50-70 brass have all worked well in their respective guns.

I suspect that the Starline cases may be right at the edge of a manufacturing tolerance overlap with the Model 1860 and 1865 Spencers so that they may work in some but not in others.  I would suggest getting at least a magazine full and trying them thoroughly before buying a large number.

I've posted this before.   I have an original Burnside 1865 carbine. 56 50 of course.  and I use Starline and they eject just fine.
  here's the trick.
I put a 1/2 inch wood dowel in each case and put the other end in my drill.  I spin then against the sanding wheel, fine, on my grinder at about a 45 degree angle.  That bevels the OUTSIDE of the case rim just like they all were in the old days.
That helps them ride up the ramp on ejection.  My blade ejector is spring loaded.  Take it apart and make sure the spring is turned to give the maximum push to the blade, and then tighten the screw until it won't move.  then...back off a tad....that is the best setting, and a little blue locktite will hold it in that position.  All of my Starline cases eject.
now.  you have to be 'vigorous' with the lever, and a drop of oil on the ramp helps too.

two out of 40 yesterday had to be lifted out, the rest ejected fine....
