Who makes a better barrel - Uberti or Pedersoli?

I've always heard that Uberti uses Pedersoli barrels, at least for their single shot reproductions.

Here is what I can tell you about Pedersoli rifling....

They bore the barrel out and ream it to polish what will be the "minimum" bore dia. the lands.
Then they cut the rifling groves and straighten the barrel based on the bore.
Then they broach the groves to polish them to the same degree as the min. bore.
Last is to finish the outside of the barrel to match the centerline of the bore.

It is my opinion that Pedersoli is manufacturing the finest production barrels available.
I hope this helps.

Thanks, Blair! I've heard good things about Ped single shot barrels and the opposite about Uberti.

I asked because a 45-70 Uberti Hi-Wall has come up at a good price, reduced by the seller. To say that he is "motivated" is an understatement. It's been on the block now for two weeks.

I wonder why ..... ?

The Italians share goodies with each other.
So, I can't say if Uberti shares barrels with Pedersoli.
It would not hurt to ask? I can post contact info for Pedersoli. But you can find that contact info in other posting of mine.
Pedersoli will be back in touch with you.

PJ,
You will be well served by a Uberti High Wall.  Very nice rifles.  Most folks get frustrated by the big bore single shots because they do not understand you have to find a load for every rifle.  No two are the same.

I don't actually know who makes Uberti single shot barrels, Uberti, Pedersoli or someone else.  I have always considered Uberti to be Very Good indeed, and Pedersoli to be premium.  You do pay for the "Premium."

If I'm going to invest in a rifle, I'd like to go with the best. That means another Shiloh product, but that would lead to a divorce, so a repro is the alternative.
Of the repros, the Peds seem to get the best reviews. I can get a basic "Hunter" model Ped for under $1500 NIB plus taxes, S&H.
It has a 30" octagonal barrel, 1x18" twist, pistol grip stock with shotgun butt, checkering, DST's. I don't need 'pretty' so much as a rifle with a good barrel and useful features.

I already have a new MVA Mid-Range windgauge tang sight (assuming the hole spacings are the same as for a Shiloh '74) waiting for a home, so all I'd need is a glove type front sight.

A similar rifle from Shiloh would be an additional $1000 plus taxes, S&H and importation fees. Out of the question!

Roy,

Thanks. That is the video I would have suggested for those that wanted my primary source of info.
Space Cowboy also does a video on Stock making at Pedersoi. I might add, They only use "American" Black Walnut for their stocks.

PJ,

It is just my opinion, again, but I think that you are on the right track with the info you suggested.
I would also suggest you contact Pedersoi by e-mail to find out about the tang rear sight screw placement. The person you will probably talk with will be Gloria. She keeps track of all communications and will be back in touch,  She is also very knowledgeable of all aspects of Pedersoil operations.
You may also be able to find out about a direct Canadian Importer? Just a thought.

.... with full interchangeability with original parts. Same can't be said for the Italian knock-offs.

There is a Canadian distributor of Pedersoli rifles in Canada - MarStar of Edmonton, Alberta. They also sell the parts kits.

Unless the arrangement has changed, Pedersoli provides Uberti with barreled actions for the Sharps.
Uberti builds their own 1885 actions and barrels, and when Pedersoli played in the 1885 game the actions came from Uberti and Pedersoli put their own barrels and wood on.

The Uberti barrels are hit and miss, if you get a good one, it's just that, if you happen to not get a good one, you always have the rebarrel option.

So if I had to buy an Italian sharps it would be the Pedersoli, and hope it's one of the good ones.

She who must be obeyed is OK with me buying another '74, this one with a pistol grip, the better to hold the rifle wid my widdle paw. The caveat - sell something you are not using!

Reasonable from her perspective, tough decision on mine. The culling process begins ......

Any Canuck interested in my Uberti 3rd Model Russian .44? A very nice Husqvarna .270 c/w dies and Nikon 6x scope .... ?

Sorry - no selling allowed. Disregard.
