Just joined SSS and ready for duty!  I am the proud owner as of last evening of a Spencer Repeater rifle model 1860, serial #9220.

There is a lot of rust, especially underneath on the rifle.  I just got it last night so I have not been able to disassemble it to try to clean it.  Once I start, I will see if the serial numbers match.  I am sure they do.  The man who owned it before me died about 35 years ago and was a collector.  His wife died a few weeks ago and I was given the rifle.  It was suggested by a friend that I just give it a good once over with some oil and run a rod through the bore.  The stock has some signs of wear, a few small nicks here and there.  I did not locate an inspector's mark.  Perhaps it is rusted over. Any advice you can offer on the preservation of this rifle would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to learning more about her history and mine as an American!

Welcome.   This is certainly the place to learn. I recommend reading archives and the frequently asked questions (SORI post).  You'll also want to read the serial number disclaimer. .
