Hi All,

I've been on a period furniture kick.  Here's my travel chest.  All hand tools, joined with pegs and cut nails.  Iron latch and corner reinforcements.

You are really hand with wood working tools. Next you are going to have to build a rolling cart to carry all these wooden boxes you are making. I really liked your ammo box with stencil too.

PvtGreg,

Do you have any ideas for some type of rifle/carbine storage safe made out of wood . . . been thinking of making one and if you have any ideas . . . ::) ::) friend of mine made one out of an old stand-up freezer that had a built in lock with the compressor removed, of course, along with all of the unnecessary internals, then lined it with wood. He then used a camo paint on the outside!  But, I'm thinking of something more period looking, a "gun" safe made out of wood.

Two Flints,

All the period gun cases I've seen were either gun racks for barracks use or for display purposes.

I think some Barracks type tacks would be pretty nice.  Let me some pictures.

Nice job Pvt Greg.

Something like this would be cool to transport to and from the range. I suppose you could put an inside hinged lid and screw it upright to a wall and it'd be sort of like a safe.

something along this line perhaps w/ a locking bar

I certainly did not mean to hijack PvtGreg's thread . . . not my intention at all, sorry PvtGreg . . . just enjoy fine carpentry as you have been making and was looking for ideas for my rifle/carbine storage safe. . . what I need is a vertical rifle safe, made out of wood, no glass doors, and wide enough to hold maybe 14 rifles or carbines.  I will age the wood when done . . . hopefully ::)

How secure do you want this container?  You may have to do double layers w/ a hidden metal layer if you desire a lot of security.

Two Flints

Matt45,

Just what I was thinking . . . a solid frame, the back, sides, top, bottom and door using 3/4" finish grade plywood with metal flashing covering the outside surface of the plywood, and then finishing the exterior using T & G Cedar or pine boards. With vent holes to prevent moisture build up inside.

A locking vertical rifle/carbine storage safe

Get a stand-up safe big enough for what you want and "sheath" the outside in wood...

OR...

I saw a Cannon safe at the LA county fair with a baked enamel paint job that looked so much like light oak that I was looking for the corner joints to see how they were so closely fitted.

Forty Rod,

My "safe" will have to be built in place on the 2nd floor of my garage . . . no way will I try to carry a real metal safe up a flight of stairs . . . I'd have hernias SO BIG trying that . . .

Here is a sample of what I hope to make . . . this is a cabinet I made for my wife . . . it's her Spice and box foods cabinet

Here's a thought- throw all the spices out and just convert the existing cabinet into a gun cabinet.  I'm sure the Missus won't mind.

Two Flints,

I love the all natural wood in your photos!

This "spice cabinet" fits into what I mentioned in my email to you about the "Wardrobe".
These were what boil down to free standing pieces of furniture that were basically moveable closets
