Is there record of what Spencers were issued to the 100th Pennsylvania Volunteers (Roundheads)? Carbines or Rifles?

Hi,

Do you have a serial # in mind?  Several PA units, 105th Pennsylvania Volunteers, but no 100!

No I don't. My GG Uncle wrote home in July 1864 about qualifying as a sniper and shooting a Spencer. "7 shooter". He was in Company D of the 100th Pennsylvania Volunteers. They were called Roundheads. They were recruited from Lawrence and Beaver Counties here in PA. They were Infantry so could I assume those selected as snipers would have been issued rifles?

Are you familiar with this book - Campaigning with the Roundheads: the history of the Hundredth Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War : the Roundhead Regiment.  Front Cover William Gilfillan Gavin

William Gavin also edited a wonderful collection of letters and diary entries from a private/corporal in Co C of the 100th Penn.  The book is called INFANTRYMAN PETIT and is a great read.  If memory serves me Petit was killed in early July 1864 at Petersburg.
