ASM Parts

As Iam sure most of you out there know parts for ASM revolvers are no longer available. I have two ASM 1860 Army black powder revolvers and three ASM 1860 Army Type I Conversions, in great shape, but the question is if I needed parts for either one will they interchange? Iam talking of the internal parts, and the backstraps and trigger guards. I know the cylinder, and hammer, and barrel would not. I know I could try them myself, but just thought some of you men out there have tried it before. I think I should have ask Pettifogger, or Coffinmaker as they seems to be up on about all the guns that come up on any of the forums.
Just wondering, and thanks if anyone can help.

The ASM parts seem closely related tothe Uberti parts. Talkin cap&baller revolvers mostly. If I were to go to fixin a conversion type ASM I'd be lookin at Uberti parts first.

Trigger guards and backstraps aren't all that breakable and if they do break they themselves can usually be fixed.

At one time...and maybe still, VTI or Taylors has some ASM parts.........if I'm remembering right.

Anywhoooo...a good gunsmith can make parts or modify other parts to work. Even I've made parts like bolts and pawls and even hammers.

Barrels and cylinders are the hard ones to interchange or make.

There are people that want the ASM's so maybe......trade or sell them off and get some Uberti pistols and a bushel basket of spare parts for the future.

Maybe enjoy yer guns and worry bout fixin them when the time comes.  Take care of the guns and the major parts last a life time anywhooooo.......the smaller internal parts can always be fixed or other parts modified to fit or just made new from scratch. Don't sweat it. Be happy.

In the meantime search fer parts...like a hobby.

Thanks Rifle, I have worked on my own guns for years, but never had to make a new part. Iam a retired dealer but had no gunsmith services at the shop, as at that time I had a old friend  that did all our work, sadly he is no longer with us. Guess I will try my hand at it if the time comes, and if not I know a couple pretty good smiths. Also since I have joined Cascity I have read many very good posts from many people who know what they are talking about, Coffinmaker, and Pettyfogger to name just two, plus yourself.
Thanks for all the help.

Took some doing, but I successfully fitted a Pietta cylinder (I had an extra on-hand) to an ASM 1860 Colt (percussion).... but had to reduce the the barrel-to-cylinder gap justa a bit to suit me (I like a gap of .001-.003, or slightly more if needed to make the gun cycle smoothly after a layer of hard fouling accumulates. It locks up tight & shoots well, but lightly marks the cylinder due to imperfect alignment of the cylinder bolt to the notches of the cylinder. I slightly adjusted the curve of the cylinder bolt on this revolver to reduce this effect. It's not a safe queen, so the cosmetic of the mark is not a problem to me. There might even be a photo or two of me shooting this pistol in old back issues of The Shootist.

Question, will any replacement nipples work on a ASM C & B 1860 revolver? I don't have any and don't want to buy the wrong ones.
Thanks again,

Reno, the  nipple size is abundant fer the cap&ballers and even fer the Centaure Centennial 1860 Colt from Belgium. Italian take the 6mm-.75 size ceptin fer Uberti takes the 5.5mm-.9 if I'm thinkin right.  CVA is Italian so.....6mm-.75 would most likely be fer yer ASM guns ceptin fer Walkers and Dragoons.

I have thread pitch gauges fer standard and metric and scew size checkers standard and metric whereas there are some holes that are threaded believe it or not. Thread pitch gauges from the hardware store and the screw size checkers from the MSC machine shop supply.

Those come in handy so you can check before you order since you never know.....some cylinders have been rethreaded because of cross threaded holes or other discrepancies.

Hey Hombre...thanks fer adding me to the lil list of who knows what they are doing. Being in a list with Pettifogger and Coffinmaker is a compliment.Thing is there are  many more here that know their stuff and will take the time to share it. That is what makes this the best place fer folks to go to to look for info bout stuff.

Hey! I saw some ASM parts on E-Bay.  They were fer the 1860 and the 1851 models. The inside parts.
Of course the Uberti parts are most times identical or close enough. I don't look fer ASM parts anymore since I realized the parts are so close to Uberti's parts.

Sorry to hear bout yer Hombre Padre that did yer work when you were a dealer. Don't ya just hate that when the good ones go first? God Bless his Gunsmithin Soul. Salute!
