Thanks to all the Pards that made the suggestion of reforming .44-40 cases to .45 Colt seems to help the blow back problem.

I have been using smokes somewhat less powder and a smokes somewhat less lubed bullet to fire form for convenience sake, but will be using real BP and a big lube boolet when loading the cases for SASS club matches.

My question is do I need to clean the smokes somewhat less residue from the barrel and if so how clean does it need to be?

Do I need to go so far as using JB compound to really deep clean the barrel or will just the ordinary cleaning with Hoppe's #9 or  Hoppe's Elite be sufficient?

Suggestions will be appreciated.

Howdy Bunk,

Clean your gun(s) well to make sure there's no residual copper fouling, heathen fad smokeyless powder fouling or crayon lube fouling.  With a borescope you should be able to see any junk in the bore.  It's not so particular which product you use for cleaning but it is important to have a bore that won't grab lead, lube and bp fouling.  A properly cleaned barrel will shoot properly lubed and sized black powder loaded with Big Lube®LLC bullets indefinitely with no need to clean to maintain accuracy or function.

But shooting black powder down a bore fouled with heathen stuff will lead to bp fouling.  Experience will teach you soon enough.

Congratulations on choosing Big Lube®LLC bullets for you black powder shooting.  This is expressly what they were designed for.  Yes, they will fly well pushed with the heathen stuff, but why would you when black powder is so much more fun.

Happy regards,

DD-MDA

Thanks Dick. That is about what I thought, but needed words from the Master
