Plastic Build up in chokes

Just got around to cleaning my guns after a two week trip and several hundred rounds through all of them. Until I started shooting choked shotguns I did not give this much thought, but you should see the plastic that comes out of the choke tube and transition area after a few rounds. I have heard of tubes flying down range and heard of this build up problem, just never had to worry about it before.
If you are shooting a choked shotgun this area deserves as much attention as the rest of the shotgun. My .02 worth.

Silver Creek Slim

Using felt wads will cure that problem.  ;)

I clean it out of    my Skeet guns with WD-40[what else]. Lay the gun on it's side and spray copious amounts of WD in the barrel in the choke area. Ler set for a couple of hours-during this period    you might spray some more WD. After the prescribed period run a bore brush or a real tight patch down the barrel. the plastic should come right out. The WD-40 evidently works it's way under the plastic and loosens it up.

I remember the days before plastic---instead of plastic build-up you got lead build-up in the barrel. Lead build-up is even harder to remove. Lots of stuff will remove plastic--Brownell's has a really good formula for that. I shoot old-fashioned wads and no plastic protectors or cups and use a tornado brush to remove the lead. Works pretty good.

Ya wanna talk serious cleaning hassles!?!?! ::)

I got a front stuffer with screw in chokes! The onliest way to git it truely clean is to take the chokes out and go after the threads with brushes and BP solvent, followed by a good lubing. Then about four days later, take it apart and do it all again!!!! :o

Rubideaux

I got me one of them "bore Snakes" fer a 12 guage. Liberaly apply Butch's Bore Shine in the barrel, give 'er a few minutes to soak and pull the snake thru a couple o' times. Works gooder than shuff.  :)I love this marquee!!
It seems my hypocrocy knows no bounds.

I have had good success with products known as brake cleaner. Brake cleaner can be purchased at any auto parts store and is aerosol with a small attachable nozzle. I shoot some spray on the leading edges of the chokes and then shove a half a paper towel through the barrel and just about all plastic comes right out.
Another product that is useful and not a problem with BP is silicone lube spray. Also available at auto parts stores. I finish cleaning and shoot some silicone spray from the chamber end and spent hulls fly out of the SxS when flipped out.  ::)

Try either straight acetone on a patch or use the Ed's Red formula of equal parts of acetone, Dextron ATF, Kerosene and ordorless mineral spirits (Varsol).  Either of these should eliminate the problem.

any of the above products will work if you let them soak in a while before cleaning. Some even state in the directions(I don't need no stinkin' directions) to let soak over nite. Like squirting down a rusty bolt. Take it with you to the range squirt in down the barrel and let soak while your going home, in my case a hour's drive or better. let it run out the muzzel and not the reciever.>>>>>>>>>>>>about 2 and half cents worth.

When I shot a lot of shotgun I used and still use areasol carb and choke cleaner.  I just took the barrel(s) off and hosed down the inside well and hit it with a bronze brush.

Becarful cause many of thes solvents will also remove the finish on yer wood or dissolve plastic parts.
