Help! Installing leaf style Hand spring

Got great price on an Uberti 73 Cattleman, I new it had a broken hand spring when I purchased it. I knew how to remove the indexing part and what it and the spring looked like and thought how hard can that be.  Well, harder than thought.  I need help on getting the spring into the groove. Is there a special tool to compress the spring at the base to get it into the groove or slot. If any one has some words of wisdom on the installation of the spring it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Take a small screwdriver and spread the grove open slightly.Position the flat spring and tap in with hammer.Using a hammer close the gap. Done.
