I am running low on hp-38 powder and have heard that win 231 is the same powder. What else might I use, going to gun show this week end hope to find any thing that will work as well as hp-38. We use hp-38 in all our cowboy loads but I will switch if I have to. Thanks Owen Judice

Owen, there is a discussion on the SASS Wire right now about suitable powders for CAS, started by someone who can't find Clays:

I have plenty of HP-38 but recently switched to trail boss. For my loads i could get up to 4 charges of hp-38 in a .38 spcl case before it came close to the top of the case. With Trail Boss if I can't double charge my powder. If I do, the powder is all the way at the top. And with a single charge of powder, I can actually see the powder in the case easily.  Just for safety alone, I would recommend checking out Trail Boss.

I like Trail Boss too for all my CAS smokeless loads.

The most recent Handloader Magazine had an article on the various powders you could use for .45 Colt.  I have not been able to find any Shotgun/Handgun Powders on the shelf or on line in almost a year.

I seldom load or shoot much 38 special but I do like Clays for those. As Rowdy said, I like more powder in my cases than empty space. That is why I like the Trail Boss for the big cartridges.

I visit 16ga.comm regularly.  The word is that powder is starting to show up in gunstores, but randomly in type & quantity.

Trail Boss and other Pistol-Shotgun powders have been unavailable in my area for some time now. Last week I was able to buy (4) 9oz. bottles of Trail Boss from two local shops. I hope the drought is coming to an end.
