Are there any threads on splitters that pards know of? I don't see anything in FAQs.
Are the Tandy ones okay? They have the Craftool Deluxe Leather Splitter 3795-00 and the Craftool Hugh-Tech Leather Splitter 3790-00.
Or are there other brands?

If you google leather splitters you'll probably come up with some useful info.

Good luck in your search.

are you talking about skivers or a manual splitter?

st8 - you've got a point: I think I'm using the wrong terminology - if skiving means just thinning an edge. I mean a machine like the Osborne 8" Splitter.
I'll see if I can change the title of this thread.

If you are patient you might try watching Ebay for a spell.  Not often will you find many real deals but you might get to see several styles and examples over time.  A bit more expensive but a better deal in my opinion, The Leather Crafters Journal, it has many company's advertising in it and you also get bonus reading material and a few patterns thrown in with all of those uhh research adds!  I was never a fan of the things, always seemed like I was tinkering with them more than I was splitting leather.  I have not seen the last one I purchased in years but it is likely stuck in a box in the shop somewhere?

The only non-powered splitter that works for me is the crank feed type.  On the pull type splitters keeping an even force as you pull has always been beyond my skills.

the manual splitters seem to work much better if the flesh side of the leather is dampened before pulling the billet through

I've read that you shouldn't reduce by more than 2 ounces with each pass.
