My New 1875 C Sharps at the range

Took the new to me C Sharps in 38-55 to the range today. I drove up to Maine yesterday and picked it up at Kittery Trading Post. It's used but it appears unfired and not a mark on it!
38-55, CSA Mid-Range Tang Sight and CSA Front Sight...



100yds, iron sights, cloudy, little wind right to left:

250g Lee 379-250-RF over 9g Unique


264g Lyman 375-449 GC over 18g 5744


250g Lyman 375-248 over Black Powder


250g Accurate 38-250D over 20g RL7


It don't like 335g bullets! (But it sure likes those Gas Checks!)

You have made a very good buy. The more you shoot this rifle the better you will like it . I have a 1874 mod. C.Sharps in .45x3-1/4" and have nothing but praise for it and the C. Sharps Co. They are very high quality and super craftsmanship. A friend of mine has a 1875 like yours in 40-90SS and has used it with great sucsess in Africa /Alaska on Brown B / and everything Austrailia has to offer . Good luck with your new friend,,,,,Dusty

If you're going to run that thing very much, you'ld be well advised to get ahold of C Sharps and buy an extra transfer bar and firing pin and spring. Get the extra pin fitted when it gets there, and carry the spares in your range box. Then when either one breaks you can send the the broken one, and they'll send you a new one free of charge.
If you start getting fail to fire, or light firing pin strikes, check the transfer bar.

Ranch, I bought an extra firing pin for mine, but didn't know the transfer bars cause problems.  How common is that?

I've had two that bent the bar it's self. But that's over several years, and thousands of rounds. But still it's not a bad thing to have on hand, just in case.

Chances are, unless you forget to put the hammer on half cock before opening the action, you will never break a firing pin. Forget it once, maybe twice, you'll need a new pin. Beautiful, super accurate rifles, and a steal IMHO.

Remember the firing pin when you allow friends to shoot it.   Just telling them about half-cocking before opening the action often doesn't sink in as they're excited about shooting it and aren't listening very closely. 

Since 1995 when I got my 75, it's shot just about every load better than 1 moa.   That is, after I found out it likes the bullets seated out.   The favorite loads have the first grease groove empty and the case lightly crimped into the groove. 

Got an order in for an 1885 based on the 75's history and quality.  It'll be a fun spring.

Yep, my '75 will also shoot less than 1 MOA.  I've shot a couple of 3-shot groups at 5/8" using only their No. 2 tang sight.

I had a 2nd '75 for awhile that shot just about identical groups.   It did the same with a No2 or the C.Sharps tang sight.  It suffered from my seeing a couple of Browning 1885s about every month.   When I noticed that C.Sharps offers an 1885 and have a half-octagon barrel, the 2nd '75's place in the safe was required for the '85.   

When talking to John about what parts would be good to keep on standby, it sounded like they hadn't had transfer bar problems for quite awhile.

I have a buddy with a C Sharps Highwall in 40-65 that has never been shot.  I'm going to pick it up from him in a couple of weeks and work up a good load for it.  I may also give it a new home.  I hate seeing it neglected!
