Too Many Primers

I have two many Magnum Large Pistol primers and too few plain Large Pistol primers.  While I understand that my Goex black powder 45 Colt loads do not need anything other than the regular large pistol primer, I am considering using the magnums simply to consume them.  My usual load of 32 grains of 3F under a 200 and 250 grain RNFP both compress the powder charge.  Weapons are OMV and Uberti.  Since black burns at a lower rate than smokeless, magnum primers may not cause excessive chamber pressures.  I could consider 2F vs 3F but is that significant?  These are my thoughts, I would appreciate any information you may have seen in publications or studies where LP mags were used in place of LP primers.  Thanks for your advice.  Sagerider

Magnum primers are absolutely fine for BP.  You will likely notice no difference at all in performance for normal CAS use.  If you are putting them on paper from a rest you might notice some very slight differences.  When I can't find standard primers but magnums are available I'll buy them because I know I can use them in my BP loads, both LP and SP size.

Well, it's said, you can t load enough BP to get seriously dangerous chamber pressure.  I actually believe that.  Mostly.  But  the difference in chamber pressure between standard and magnum primers has to be measured with a machine.  There may be a slight increase in velocity, say 50 FPS or so, but that's about it.
I personally use nothing but Magnum primers in my cartridge guns.  Improves the burn.  I think.  I have no scientific proof.  I do get less crud in the barrel when I shoot 2f with Mag primers.

Coffinmaker, I, at one time, had too many primers.  With all the good advice, I can now have enough to make it past the November elections.  But I best stock up as we citizens can make some very foolish decisions at voting time and 2016 is surely coming.  Thanks, guys.  Sagerider

Nobody seems to believe the old line "that's no good, send it to me for proper disposal" anymore anyway.

How can you have too many primers?!  I just don't believe it's possible!  :o ;D

Too many primers?  Too much powder? :o
That's like saying "I have too much money.  Where should I send the excess?" :D

There's no such thing as too much.  Not in these times.

Of course, if you believe I'm wrong, you may un-burden yourself of your excess by sending it to me.  PM me for an address.

What a great group of guys!!!!  No matter how wrong-thinking I become, someone is always ready to show me the error of my ways.  OK, not too many but possibly the incorrect type.  No, not even that but just a suitable substitution.  And, there is always a pard willing to take the problem with just the addition of a little postage.  We are just a big, happy family.  Sagerider

Yes.  A big happy family.  We form one big circle, holding hands, singing "My Goat Knows the Bowling Score, Hallelujah".  Then we iron shirts. And make s'mores.

Mike Venturino actually recommends magnum primers for BP. Use 'em up!!! ;)

In one of the first issues of The Blackpowder Cartridge News, Mike Venturino ran some tests with the 45 Colt, blackpowder and various primers in Colt SAA's. No pressure figures were given but Mike reported the best groups were consistently shot with CCI large pistol magnum primers. I believe he also touched on this topic in a couple of his books of which "Shooting Sixguns Of The Old West" is still available. I have used Federal, CCI and Winchester primers, both standard and magnum( the Winchester large pistol primers are marked suitable for both) for 15 years at Cowboy shoots and can't tell the difference for this application. I've never experienced any problems. Of course all this has been with blackpowder. I haven't put these rounds on paper for awhile so can't report any significant difference in accuracy, at least for my guns, loads, lube, etc. However, I've got the bug to experiment again(been reading too many good posts at this site!) so maybe this summer will be a busy one. So go ahead and use whichever primer you favor, as long as you keep the primers in the correct pockets you'll be fine.

The problem is there is a dwindling number of people who work for a living and a growing number who vote for a living.
All my cowboy gun's calibres start with a 4! It's gotta be big bore and whomp some!
