How does the crimp die work on the 56-56 cartridge?  Is it tapered or a roll crimp?  I was curious since the bullet out side dia. Is the same as the case except for the small heal on the rapine mould.  Doesn't the bullet get jammed in the die body since I assume the taper crimp is smaller that the bullet dia. at the case mouth.
Thanks

Blair

Rim fire,

The 56- 56 designation comes from the body dia. of the casing. Just forward of the rim dia. it measures .560, and right at the mouth of the casing it also measure right at .560.
So, the case body dia. is slightly larger than the bullet dia. which is .535 to .540 just forward of the heel location on the bullet. (depending on the ammo manufacture)
There is room for a small amount of crimp.

Thanks for the info.  The bullet I'm using is .546 dia.  Seems pretty close.  Anyone actually use these dies.  What case length when using the rapine .546 bullet.

Rim fire,

.546 dia. bullet seems somewhat large based on the original cartridges I have. This is where my info is coming from. But should still crimp (may work with with pure soft lead, but, not as well with (modern) hard lead. Just my opinion).

The shortest of all the #56 size cartridges designed for the Spencer is the 56-56.
I have found the NEI dies designated for the 56-50 Springfield will work on the 56-56 Spencer designed ammo with some adjustment to the die settings.
Please read Marcot's section on the various ammo made for use in Spencer's. (Ammo manufacturing seems to vary greatly)
