Does anyone have any information about the logo, if there even was one, used by the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company? Just curious. Thanks,

Hi Cal,

Good question, and I'll still my neck out on this one by saying I don't believe that the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company had a "specific" logo for their firearms.

Since their sales were initially for the Federal Government all that was needed were "spec" sheets indicating the "worthyness" of the Spencer for military use.  Later, advertisements were used to indicate the variety of firearms produced by Spencer such as this one, but I wouldn't consider this a logo in the true sense.

Not a Logo per-say but I have a Spencer Advertising Mirror I bought some 35 or so years ago.

That old advertisement is pretty interesting. I didn't know that there was a "small carbine" and a "large carbine". The small carbine seems to have a smaller receiver with a much smaller "knuckle" for the finger lever pinion. I imagine it had to do with weight savings, much like the various lightweight Winchesters offered decades later. I assume that the small carbine was meant for the smaller variants of the .56-56, like .56-50 and such.

Anyone ever see one of these small carbines in hand? They interest me.

The "smaller" Spencer Carbine never went into production and was probably more intended for sport hunting initially . . . it eventually served pretty much as a prototype of what Spencer wanted in the way of a military repeater . . . and the Civil War impending, Spencer devoted his attention to a larger, "full scale" model of his carbine for the military.  The Marcot book has an interesting section on the "Small" carbine Spencer first invented.

Ah, I see. One has to wonder what would it have been like had the small carbine made it into production. I imagine it wouldn't have done much against the Henry or Winchester '66, but who knows.

Still, pretty cool to see pre-production prototypes advertised like that.
