I have in the past only loaded lead bullets.  My first time loading jacketed bullets will be for my new/old Savage 99 in .300 Savage caliber.  I have some good recipes using 150gr .308 bullets & H4895.  My question is whether or not to lube the bullets.  I have some Lee Allox & could use that in a bowl to lube them but is this a good or bad idea?   I have received conflicting input on this issue.  Any input is appreciated.

Bad idea.  The jacket eliminates the need for lead bullet type lube.  Think about it.  Have you ever seen in any reloading manual or ever read in any article about loading ammo the mention of lubing jacketed lead bullets?

My Good Seamus -
In the world of metal machining Copper is considered a "self lubricating metal' when cut with steel tooling.

This is one reason why copper and brass are often used in educational exercises on the lathe and mill.
As a result, (As our good Pettitfogger points out) a copper-jacketed bullet when used with smokeless powder,
does not really need lube.

Whilst Lead is also considered "self-lubricating" in the machine world, it is worked at lower speeds.

Thus when driving lead through a bore, lube is required even with smokeless. When using BP, the lube also counteracts fouling, in an attempt to keep it soft.

( In fact there are several formulas  of "leaded steel" aka "Free machining steel"  such as 12L14 which makes chips instead of ribbons, machines very easily, and leaves a very nice finish. )

Thanks, Pards.  Makes logical sense but following that's gotten me in trouble before!

Just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something.
