In what types of matches does the 1876 fit for CAS?

Usually lever rifle side matches. Sometimes called Buffalo shoots. It does not use pistol cartridges so therefore it cannot be used in the regular stages.

In SASS, the 1876 is most often used in long range rifle side matches for the Lever Action Rifle - Rifle Caliber.  There are also long range competitions for the Lever Action Rifle - Pistol Caliber, Single Shot Rifle - BP and sometimes Single Shot Rifle - Smokeless.

Local SASS clubs can allow the 1876 and other big bores in unofficial categories like "Monte Walsh" or "Iron Man."  Strictly for grins and giggles.

The Plum Creek Shooting Society in Lockhart, Texas offers several alternative categories including Cody-Dixon Lever which allows a rifle-caliber lever gun.  Those shooters shoot six rounds at further targets than the regular category shooters.

Thanks for the replies lads.  I've got a Uberti 1876 coming, and I was curious to know how I could employ it.

In our local cowboy shoots, you can use rifle caliber rifles in the main match.  In fact, we encourage it.  Our targets are all steel knock-downs in half scale, patterned on the old Army Blunt targets.  Rifle targets are usually anywhere from fifteen to fifty yards away.  Lots of fun!
