I've been looking for the proper brass stud that was used as a closure on a lot of military leather over the past 150 or more years --like the one on the issue 1911 holster -- or on a Civil War era cap box. I see a bunch of likely fittings on the Tandy site, but don't trust it to necessarily be historically accurate. What do you use to "get it right"?

Buckleguy.com has some that are a little flatter on top then tandy's and look les like trailer hitch balls  Blakckade Runners has mid 1800's period correct cap box studs they also have knapsack and sabre buttons scroll down this page. http://www.blockaderunner.com/Catalog/catpg27.htm
They can be found other places as  as button studs, Sam Brown studs.

If you have access to the book Packing Iron pages 14 - 48 show many examples of different studs. Pg 41 shows cap box studs very close to what blockade runners carry. Also there are several examples where the knapsack/saber buttons are used and are similar to what are sold by Blockade Runners. I just seen the flat headed studs some place, can't remeber where when I do I will let you know.

Camano, thanks. The ones Blockade Runner has look like just what I want.

If you think $3.00 is bad did you notice their postage $12.00. I have not found another supplier for that style. If you know of a supplier for that style would you be willing to share.

The shape on that finial looks right, but I'd have to see one to be sure it is the right size for the 1860's thru 1880's (or a bit later).  Years ago, I found an original Pattern 1863 holster that was too far gone to salvage. I cut the finial from the leather and had a machine shop make a carbide cutting tool, which I use to turn brass finials on a lathe. (Yeah, I know...some "purists" don't like turned finials, but I defy them to come up with the money to have them forged or castings made!)  No complaints over the years from my customers about lathe-turned finials.  I do use smaller ones that look like the one pictured for cap pouches.
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!
