I've searched the forum but haven't found anything specific yet. Thought I'd simply ask.
My 3 year old vinegaroon mix for beautiful black holsters is doing great. However the brown dye I made from black walnut husks 2 years ago has developed mold and a foul odor. This time of year when nothing is growing, I am wondering if a brown soak dye could be made from something else I can maybe buy at the hardware or big box home supply store, or perhaps Hobby Lobby where aniline dyes may be available. Thanks all. Don

When my walnut dye gets a white like scum on the top, I just remove it, it doesn't hurt a thing, I've also added newly made dye to old, and had great results.....

I've had mine mold if I go a while without using it. I always try to remember to keep it stirred and keep the lid on the pot. I also add a touch of alcohol when I'm finished, that seems to help keep it from molding.

If it molds I just scrape it off the top and toss it. I have a big canning pot for mine that I just add more when it gets low. I make a batch in the fall when the Walnuts fall from the trees and store it in the freezer in gallon jugs.
