Morning, Troopers:

Since I'm at Ft Riley for the duration of my OEF healing, I decided to work to the Cavalry Museum when I can.
What a cool job to work with the artifacts, weapons, uniforms, etc.  8)
It ain't permanent, but I'm going to be here awhile!

I can see why Col Pitspitr loves Ft Hartsuff.

When I saw the title of the thread that was what it made me think of.

Cathy and I stopped there a couple of summers ago. It's a really cool place. Heck, even Cathy enjoyed it! ;)

I saw items that I'd only seen in pictures before.

BRAVO ZULU!!!

While you are there pay a visit to the U.S. Cavalry Association HQ.  They have a pretty good reference library and a modest collection of artifacts.  It's a good organization; you can join up when you visit!!!   :)

I don't have an appointment this afternoon, so I reckon I'll go over and volunteer some help on my day off.
Dr Smith and Ms Debby are fine folks to work with.

If you are ever close to Ft Riley, ponder checking out the museums.
There are also:  1st Infantry Museum, Custer Museum, Patton Museum, KS's first capitol building,  Riley County Museum (Manhattan).

I have to know, do they have one of Custer's jockstraps there like they do at the LBH?   ::)

Also are you going to the NNG Cav Ball this year, I think I still owe you a hat cleaning and reblocking, have someone drop it by if you can't.  Some of the guys are getting it done early this year. ;)

I won't be able to get to the Cavalry ball.  I recollect I have staff duty that night.
The Cav hat don't really a sprucing up this spring.  The shape is still fine, just got some Kansas dust on it.

Much obliged for the offer!!!

If there are any upcoming KS musters whilst I am still at Ft Riley, GAF members are welcome to get a tour of the Cavalry Museum.  And if you are in GAF uniform, it would be GREAT.  The director thinks it would be very cool to do this.
Sorry, no firearms though.  That is a problem getting in the gate.

Is there an option of presenting ID Card and registering with the PMO like at Ft Huachuca.

Would they take a similar narrow minded approach concerning an 1850 Foot Officers Sword or the 1860 staff and field

I reckon if you want to let them know you have it, they will want it documented and put in the arms room.
And they would want to know at what building you will be living in (as TDY or PCS).
Since you're a "visitor" they probably would want it surrendered at the gate.  And the gates may not have arms lockers.
It is a question for the MP's.  But I'm not sure I'd want to ask it.  ::)

I don't reckon edged weapons would present a problem.
PM me and we can check with the currator.

Yep, things are probably different in AZ.

Ft Huachuca has a range retirees, dependents can use.  Also there is hunting on post for retirees, dependents and active duty.  That is the reason why they allow pvt weapons.  I did have to tell them where on post they would be stored.  My 5th wheel in the on post RV lot was sufficient for a storage location.

Was not hunting on post but figured a RV lot surrounded by MPs was a safer place than off post the border having never been more secure not withstanding.

Hello. I was there a few weeks ago on a Thursday afternoon.  I talked to some guy who was closing the place and I don't know if that was you or not.  I told him that they misspelled Capt. Albert Barnitz's name on the Custer display.  I still need to stop back to go through the other museum.

Mustang Gregg

No Sir.  You didn't speak to me.  I'm the SFC in ACU's (usually).  I generally have to leave for WTB formation at 15:15 or so.

Actually right now there are only two other guys that work there.
They are the curator (Dr. Smith) and Ron who is in charge of displays.

Is the misspelled name on a museum-made document?  Or an actual relic?
I realize there are a lot of misspelled names and places on the old documents and rosters.

MG

PS  I've never had a chance to go through the 1st Div museum either.  :-[

It was probably a janitor.  He was locking the doors.  He said he knew who the right person to talk to about it.  It was a museum typed description under a picture or something as I recall.  It had probably been typed many years ago by its appearance.  I don't have my phone with me or I'd look for the picture.  The Custer/7th cav display is three sided and it was on the right side when facing it as I recall.  Right next to the opening between rooms.

DO ENJOY!  I did my first museum internship there in 1995!  It is still one of the highlights of my days!  On the weekends I had free run of the library/archives!
