Hey all, was wondering about a Cimarron ASM .44 Colt Conversion I saw for sale. Does it have the smaller bore of the newer factory conversion repos, or does it require heel based boolits? Also, any thoughts on the gun? I absolutely love the Colt army and have been wanting to get me a cartridge gun for a while, and was considering this one...

That ASM conversion takes "modern" 44 Colt ammo, with inside-lubed .429 bullets.  It will not chamber 44 Spcl or 44 Russian rounds (unless you only load 3, skipping every other chamber) because those rims will overlap eachother.  The ASM conversions had lots of QC problems and parts are pretty much unavailable.  There are some good ones out there but more bad ones.

I'd like to "Pile On" to what Abilene posted.
The ASM conversions are an "iffy" item at best.  While good looking guns, Armi San Marco didn't know the meaning of quality control.  The average was 1 in 7 guns worked.  There are currently NO parts available, and even when there were, ASM parts seldom fit ASM guns.  The guns are not a good gamble.

I like the ASM conversions too. I like to buy them too.
I thunk that when the conversions were being made Carlos San Marcos was in the thoes of selling and retiring so some guns may have been shoved thru in a flurry of disorganization.
Basicaly I thunk thry are good enough guns to play with and get on the road goin straight and trouble free.
It was US American Arms (they made a real nice Peacemaker SAA fer awhile) that bought San Marcos out wasn't it?  :o :'(

I have seen some FINE Examples of ASM manufactured guns, Dave Anderson did some remarkable work with them.
Read Cartridge Conversions by Dennis Adler.

ASM was a comparatively small Manufacturer compaired to the other Importers.
They did have some good artisns working there....

IMHO ... ASM got cought up in a $$$ war vs supply & demand
... There were the low box retail suppliers like Sportmans Warhouse & Tradisions
that demanded low cost so they could under cut the importers namely Navy Arms, Taylor's Cimarron & EMF
ASM cut corners to appeass them.... and those are guns the spell ASMs demise.
when planets align...do the deal !
