Well I am down to buying my shotgun belt and I will be equipped. What are some of the favorites. I have been eyeing the long hunter designe that I think Kirkpatrick makes. Its pricey but looks functional. Any suggestions?

Shotgun belts are like underwear.  Whatever feels good to you is the right one.  ;D

Howdy Pettifogger,

I take it from your comment that you have begun wearing your underwear on the outside now (just below your belly button).

Not sure.  Haven't seen my belly button in years.

Look for the belt and loops that hold the shell high. Some, like the one I use, have scallops/cutouts in the front rim of the loop. Make sure the leather is not too heavy/stiff. Very difficult to pull unless you get the two to a holder as double barrel shooters do. Individual loops with heavy leather will not allow easy grabbing of two or more at a time. The leather gets trapped between the shells.

The wife & I are using a couple of web shotshell belts from  Westernstarleather.com. We've used the belts for a couple of years and can speak highly of the quality of these belts, plus with the leather strip on the base all the shotgun shells sit at the same height.

Hi Bart,

If it is your first, one of those fire hose belts will work fine and are rather inexpensive. I'm on my third. I had to have one to match my blingy buscadero. It was not cheap.

So, if you are on your first holster, it is best to be frugal because you may someday decide to start stylin'  ;)

I recommend getting one that holds 25 shells or more. That is the most I've seen on a stage and you could drop a few.

Regards,

OP.  Of the several I use, the Kirkpatrick is one of the good ones.

Love my Carver belt.  I bought extras so that if he ever quit making them I would have another when mine wore out.

Also consider a canvas shotshell belt.

I've been using El Paso Saddlery's canvas shotshell belt for about 5 years and really like it.  The shells are secure, but slide out much quicker than a leather belt.

I recently purchased one from long hunter. The one i bought was the one that does not have a place for your pistol cartridges and it also does not let the shells come out the bottom of the pocket, i forget the name of it off the top of my head, but a very effective belt. It has definitely improved my times with the shotgun. It comes in many configurations though and since i shoot a side by side i got the one that holds two shells close together in one pocket. I would definitely recommend it.
God made man, Samuel Colt made them equal.

I'm just starting out too. I bought some triple K holsters and belt and the shotshell slide. I figured with the slide, I can put it on the gun belt or stick it to another belt.

Oh, I was at Lowe's Hardware store, and they sell a 2" wide leather tool belt for $10. I figured if I decide I wanted the shotshells on a belt rather than on the gun belt, I could just buy that and stick the slide on it. I'm no pro, so maybe that's not a good idea for some reason, but it seems like a nice flexible way to deal with the shotshells...put it where you want...gun belt or extra belt.

If the worst mistake you make in SASS is buying a $10 belt that does not work out, that is really not too bad at all.  Buy it, try it, if you like it you just hit it out of the park, is not it is a 2.5 Fru Fru Starbucks Coffee mistake.
