Question about whacking my barrel

Howdy Boys.

I'm thinking of having the barrel shortened on my .45-75 to 24" and having the mag. cut back as well.

Does anyone know if I have the smith make it a button mag gun if the 'zine will hold and properly feed three rounds? From looking at it, seems to me that with three in the mag that the follower and spring might not have enough room.

Has anyone done this, heard of it being done or otherwise have factual data on the idea?

I've seen some original Winchesters done up this way but don't know what might happen as a retrofit to an Uberti.

To be clear, button magazine means that the mag stops just at the outside of the forearm metal.

Howdy Wyldwylliam, Just a thought, could you cut a wood dowl rod that would fit inside your magazine spring, in the magazine tube , (A plug) So To Speak, and stop the cartridges at the end of the forearm. Then you can see how many it will hold and test for function.Should be the same spring tension and travel room in the magazine ,as if it were cut . Not sure it will work but easy to try. Good Luck Amigo,,,,,,Dusty.

Hey Dusty, hadn't thought of that, but it's a good idea. Shall give it a try if I can get the mag cap off without marring the slot. Iirc, the Uberti cap is threaded rather than held in with a screw as on the originals. Guess I'll have to make a driver to fit.

Anyhow, thanks a lot for the tip.

Cheers,

I did that to my 45-60 Chappy  years ago.The 45-60 is the same length as the 45-75. The magazine will hold 5 rds. I also had the barrel turned half round. The job took a pound and a half off the rifle, originally with a 28' octagonal barrel. If you look up my posts, you will find the details. There are also pictures...not on my post(I couldn't figure out how to do it) but next to a post of mine by others.
