Q's about wanting to reload for my new 38/357 Uberti 1873

Hiya all,

I have a Uberti 1873 in 38/357 on the way and want to reload. I understand the overall bullet length is very critical to prevent jamming. Does anyone know what this length is?

With the lever all of the way open look on the bottom of the rifle, at the mortice for the lifter.  The cartridge OAL should be no  longer than the opening.  A length of not more than 1/4 inch or more shorter than the opening should work well.  One eighth inch shorter would probably be better.

The '73 is real good about feeding nearly anything within reason. It's the '92 that has problems with cartridge length. Just stay close to the OAL as listed in most reloading books.

I would agree with SF.  The newer/current Uberti 73 will feed almost an OAL without jamming.  That said, I like to run mine at about 1.45 +/-.  Many run the OAL out to 1.50.  The bottom line is that the design of  the 1873 is such that the shorter OAL you use, the more you are pushing the column of bullets back into the magazine with each cycle of the action.

Some of the older Uberti 73 had a steeper angle on the front of the carrier, and were very sensitive to OAL.  Past history - unless you have an older version!
