Hi Pards, I'm almost embarrassed to send this post to such a talented, experienced group, but there might be another rookie out there that might benefit. The tool is a marking guage, but not a regular rosewood style. This is  cheap wheel marking guage from Shop Fox for $12. They are available everywhere and pretty ones up to $100 or so. I have been using to mark parallel lines to practice tooling and it works fine. Did have to sharpen and dress up the cutting wheel on some fine stones. Adjustable from 1/4" to about 5".
Hope it helps some body save some money- BobbyF

Newbie or experienced leather worker, if something works for you it's the right tool for the job. I have a bunch of tools that were intended for other uses but they found their way into my leather working tool box. I used to use a block plane to shave the edges of my projects. I hadn't thought about using a wheel marking gauge but that doesn't mean I won't in the future. Thanks for the post.

Thanks Marshal Wil, I did copy your short stubby cutting knive I saw on about a year old post. Made mine from reall old retired butcher knife, about 2" long and 1" wide. Good steel, sharpens easy, and cuts fine.thanks - BobbyF.

That knife was a copy of one Charlie Miller, the saddle maker I worked for, made when he was young. I never got used to a round knife. With that, I didn't need to.
