Something about this piece makes me want to go "Hummm". I'm usually from Missouri anyway when it comes to alleged post-Civil War Regular Army unit markings on firearms, especially 7th and 10th Cavalry. In this case, Marcot in his "Spencer Repeating Firearms" notes on page 124 concerning this weapon: "(these) altered repeaters remained in storage and were never issued. They were later sold as surplus...".  Marcott could, of course, be wrong, but one would need to see some paper trail verifying how, if, and especially why the 10th received one or more Spencer rifle muskets.
