Wolfgang, I read this today and am encouraged to shoot the original New Model Police I bought a few weeks ago. Everything is in working order but has some pitting in the barrel and the hammer may need to be worked on. The hammer face is in rough shape like you mentioned about yours.
I have been told by a Remington collector and a few others to have it magnafluxed before shooting. I think it may be a good idea to have the cylinder magnafluxed but it does look to be in good condition.
Anyway, Your original has really got me motivated to get out and shoot my little revolver.Glad to hear yours is shooting well.

I didn't trust the cylinder on mine.  If it is pitted that bad on the outside there must be damage internally as well.  And there is very little steel between those chambers.  The Armi San Marco cylinders are working fine.

 Mine is good in the cylinder.The pitting is in the barrel and is cleaning up better than I expected it do.
