Just got my copy of Adler's book on cartridge conversions - Wow! What eye candy, and all the data is amazing.

I really enjoyed what he said in: "Why Remingtons Make the Best Cartridge Conversions" -

"The folks in Ilion, New York knew what they were doing when the designed the Remington New Model Army revolver. It was stronger and better built than the Colt open top design that had been around since the 1830s.
The fixed barrrel was an improvement, the top strap made it more durable and the cylinder could be changed out in a matter of seconds without taking the gun apart."

While I'm enjoying my '71 Open Tops, I think even more of my Taylor's Remington conversions in 44-40. They may not be historically correct, but they are going to stand up well. I find them a little large for 'Duelist' with my small hands, but more comfortable to shoot than my Pietta Remington with the Kirst .45 Colt conversion.

I like being able to change back to cap & ball with that gun.

I don't do these things to others and I require the same from them."  John Wayne

PJ,

I know this is a bit late to respond to this, but, here goes.
You may also what to check,
"A study of COLT CONVERSIONS and Other Percussion Revolvers", By R. Bruce McDowell.
This is a photographic study of variations of different Convertibles and Conversion percussion revolvers, focusing on Colts.

Adler's is a pretty book - but McDowell's will really teach you about Conversions.

Good Luck finding a copy - they haven't been reprinted, so they're out on the secondary market and they're expensive.

St. George,

Very true!
Having options or alternatives are always nice.
"Inter Library" loan maybe an option if one can not find a copy.
Not quite the same as buying though is it?

Gaucho Gringo

Got mine over 10 years ago for $12.00. Seems like the only thing I buy that doesn't loose value is firearms and firearm related items. IMHO the book is a good one. Too bad it is not readily available at a decent price. Don't even need to read it, the pictures tell a story. :o
